Lakewood police arrested an alleged drunk driver at gunpoint Saturday night following a hit and run accident, according to reports.
According to The Lakewood Scoop, police responded to the downtown area after a crash occurred involving a suspected drunk driver at around 9:45 p.m. Officers quickly located the suspect driver on Clifton Avenue after reportedly spotting him swerve in and out of oncoming traffic.
Lakewood police attempted to stop the drunk driver by pulling out in front of him as a barricade. However, the suspect continued driver and actually rammed the police officer’s vehicle.
Amazingly, some of this incident was actually caught on video and obtained by The Lakewood Scoop. The video shows a police officer approach the vehicle with his gun drawn and pointing at the driver. The driver is then pulled out of his vehicle and handcuffed after he is wrestled to the ground. While the suspect is being arrested, his car continues to roll but is quickly stopped by an officer.
These circumstances are very serious and the driver most likely faces DWI charges as well as Eluding a Police Officer and Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, which are indictable criminal offenses that would be handled at the Ocean County Superior Court. If you or your family has been arrested or charged with DWI or any related charges it is important that you speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney to learn your rights and options.
